Celtic v Hearts (Match Stats)

Celtic 3

xG 2.08

(Maeda 25, Kyogo 60 and Haksabanovic 84)

Hearts 1

xG 0.62

(Ginnelly 6)

Most of Celtic's xG came in the first quarter of the game after Hearts had scored with Celtic producing an xG of 1.15 from 3 shots in that period and from this scoring 1 goal.

Celtic's xG of 2.08 was less than this season's average of 2.35. The 0.69 xG for Hearts was the highest Non Penalty xG since the game against Rangers in January. Celtic's 11 shots at goal and 3 on target were the 2nd lowest of the season with only that Rangers game in January any lower. Although 9 of the 11 shots were from inside the box and at 82% of shots being in the box that is the highest % of the season.

Celtic's 744 passes was 25% up from the corresponding fixture against Hearts at Celtic Park in August. 41% of Celtic's attacks came down the left with 39% down the right and 20% down the middle although those attacks down the middle produced 0 xG.

Celtic lined up with;

  • Hart

  • Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt and Bernabei

  • O'Riley, McGregor and Mooy

  • Abada, Kyogo and Maeda

There were 4 changes to the line up from the weekend with Ralston, Bernabei, O'Riley and Abada coming in for Johnston, Taylor, Hatate and Jota.

Taylor dropped out the squad altogether but hopefully it was just him being rested and Forrest missed out again.

Jota, Hatate, Oh, Haksabanovic and Iwata came on as subs for Maeda, O'Riley, Abada, Kyogo and Mooy.

Carter-Vickers made the most passes with 119 and he also received the most passes (98) along with Ralston who also received 98. 46 of Ralston's received passes were from Carter-Vickers.

Carter-Vickers made 16.7% of the team's passes and that was the 4th highest for the right sided centre back this season and above the average of 13%. Ralston's 14.2% was the highest for any right back this season and above the average of 11%.

Best contributors for xG were Kyogo on 0.69, Maeda 0.58 and Jota on 0.35. For xA it was Kyogo on 0.3 and Mooy on 0.22.

I predicted in match preview that Celtic would get the benefit of VAR and that an offside goal would be given and that indeed did happen in this game. https://www.celtictrends.com/post/celtic-v-hearts-match-preview. Although please ignore my predicted score in the match preview.
