Celtic v Rangers (Match Stats)

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

Celtic 3

xG 1.09

(Kyogo 26 & 62 and Jota 73)

Rangers 2

xG 0.69

(Tavernier 45 and 78)

Despite all the noise about how well Rangers did in this game the none of the stats back this up.

xG was 1.09 to 0.69 in Celtic's favour and that xG advantage was seen in every quarter of the game. Post Shot xG was 1.76 v 0.94 in Celtic's favour and Post Shot as a % of xG was 161% v 136% in Celtic's favour.

Celtic led the game for 47 minutes in total. Rangers never led once. Celtic had 9 shots versus Rangers 8 and Celtic had 7 on target to Rangers 3. 7 of Celtic's were in the box compared to Rangers 6.

Celtic had 55% possession and 650 passes versus Rangers 593 and Celtic's accuracy was 79% versus Rangers 76%.

Celtic had 136 final third passes versus Rangers 127 and 31% of the game was played in Rangers final third versus 27% in Celtic's.

Celtic's PPDA was 5.6 versus Rangers 8.3 and again Celtic's was better in the first 15 minutes at 4.5.

However Celtic weren't at their best and in fact were disappointing at times but the noise that Rangers deserved something isn't backed up with the numbers. At best they are saying they earned a point. In a game they needed to win.

Celtic's centre backs completed 34% of Celtic's passes and that is up from the previous games this season which were 25%, 31% and 24% with the two wide forward positions contributing only 9% of the team passes. This is compared to 11%, 10% and 13% in previous games. Rangers looked a team without belief and offered nothing. Their only positive moments came from Celtic's slackness.

Carter-Vickers made the most passes with 83 and he also received the most passes (57). 24 of them coming from Starfelt.

Celtic lined up with;

  • Hart

  • Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt and Taylor

  • Mooy, McGregor and O'Riley

  • Jota, Kyogo and Maeda

Just the one change to the line up from last weekend with Mooy coming in for the Iwata.

Forrest, Ralston, Abada and Hatate were all still missing from the squad. Ben Summers dropped out the squad due to Mooy's return.

Iwata, Haksabanovic, Oh, Turnbull and Bernabei came on as subs for Mooy, Jota, O'Riley, Kyogo and Maeda. Best contributors for xG were Jota 0.57 and Kyogo 0.45. For xA it was only O'Riley on 0.23 that made a notable contribution.
