Celtic v Rangers (Match Stats)

Celtic 1

xG 0.75

(Jota 42)

Rangers 0

xG 1.35

After going into the break 1-0 down Rangers had to give it everything in the second half and despite 59% possession in the 2nd half and an overall match xGD of 0.6 they still didn't do enough to challenge Celtic.

Celtic's 0.75 was their lowest xG during Ange's tenure however it didn't look a game where Celtic were struggling. Maybe just patiently controlling it. Again Rangers offered nothing and my only criticism of Celtic would be that they gave Rangers too much respected. Every time Celtic pressured any Rangers player they lost possession. Celtic just didn't pressure enough.

For Post Shot xG it was 1.12 for Rangers and 1.03 for Celtic.

58% of Celtic's attacks came down the right hand side and that follows 45% against Motherwell which was the 2nd highest of the season.

Celtic lined up with;

  • Hart

  • Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt and Taylor

  • O'Riley, McGregor and Hatate

  • Jota, Kyogo and Maeda

Two changes to the line up from last weekend with Hatate and Jota coming in for Iwata and Haksabanovic.

However one distinct change was that Hatate was the most further forward midfielder which is not normally the case when it is this midfield trio. Usually O'Riley would be the most further forward and starting the press alongside Kyogo.

Bernabei and Summers the two players to drop out of the matchday squad. Forrest and Abada didn't make the squad as they were still injured.

Ralston, Iwata, Mooy, Haksabanovic and Oh coming on as subs for Johnston, O'Riley, Hatate, Jota and Kyogo. With Mooy taking up the unusual most forward midfield role.

Bain, Kobayashi, Turnbull and Vata were the unused subs.

Starfelt received the most passes in the match receiving 51 with 18 of them coming from Carter-Vickers. The most passing combination of the match was Starfelt to Taylor which happened 28 times.

For Rangers Lundstram received the most passes with 49 with the most coming from Arfield despite his 12 passes to Lundstram only coming from the 63rd minute onwards. The most passing combination for Rangers was Goldston to Tavernier which happened 16 times.

Lundstram had the most passes in the match at 67 with Starfelt next on 65.

Most for xG for Celtic was Jota with 0.38 then Starfelt was next on 0.13. For xA it was Maeda on 0.37 and Mooy on 0.13.
