Celtic 1

xG 1.4

(Giakoumakis 34)

Shakhtar Donetsk 1

xG 0.74

(Mudryk 58) Celtic took until 32 minutes before achieving any meaningful chance and it fell to Giakoumakis and he would get his more clear cut chance two minutes later which he duly converted. Giakoumakis now scoring 22 goals in games the 22 games he has started and he has scored in 16 of those 22 games. That's 73% of the games Giakoumakis has started he has scored in. An incredible record.

The xG from the first game was 1.48 Celtic and 0.38 Shakhtar so the gap wasn't as wide in this game however it was a similar story with Celtic having the best chances but not getting that vital win.

The accurate pass trends below shows Celtic dominating the opening 15 minutes as they usually do but Shakhtar did have the edge in accurate passes for the rest of the half.

though was slightly different in superiority with Shakhtar dominating the ball in those first 15 minutes and then first 15 minutes of the second half with Celtic putting the pressure on towards the end of the game.

Total accurate passes in the game was 615 for Celtic and 536 for Shakhtart at 89% and 87% respectively.

Overall possession was 54% for Celtic with the best spells 30-35, 75-80 and 85-90 when possession was 80%, 81% and 84.1%. The lowest spell was 50-55 minutes at only 25.8%.

Celtic lined up with five changes from the Hearts game with Ralston, Bernabei, Mooy, Forrest and Maeda making way for Juranovic, Taylor, Kyogo, Abada and Haksabanovic.

However there was only one change from the Leipzig game with Giakoumakis coming in for Maeda.

  • Hart

  • Juranovic, Carter-Vickers, Jenz and Taylor

  • O'Riley and Hatate

  • Abada, Kyogo and Haksabanovic

  • Giakoumakis

Haksabanovic moving from the No.10 role against Leipzig to the wide left role and Kyogo dropping back into the No.10 role.

Opposite the the player positions versus Leipzig to compare against the positions v Shakhtar.

The two most noticeable things are the higher defensive line versus Shakhtar and how far up O'Riley was against Shakhtar.

Maeda, Mooy, Forrest and Turnbull came on as subs for Haksabanovic, Kyogo, Abada and Hatate.

Celtic had 282 final third passes which was just 8 short of double the amount they had against Leipzig and 45% of the possession was in the final third. The only problem was that Shakhtar are used to play against teams that dominate and it suited their game plan. Summary;

  • Performance - Very similar to the first game against Shakhtar for xG, possession and theresult.

  • Style - O'Riley pushed a lot further forward in this formation as was overall defensive line.

  • Player watch - Greg Taylor won 10 duels out of 13, had 6 recoveries and had 90% passing accuracy.
