Europa League Pots

Attached and below is a table replicating the Europa League Pots ahead of the draw for the group stages.

Listed alongside which pot each team is in is the ELO ranking, Opta ranking, market value of the team (from Transfermrkt), their final league position last season and the % of points they achieved in their league last season.

Who does everyone want?

It's a pity for Celtic that they can't draw Rangers as Rangers are one of the weakest Pot 1 teams.

So Salzburgh and Dinamo Zagreb would be the ideal pot 1 teams with Aston Villa and ROma being the ones to avoid.

For pot 2 Ferencvaros would be a good draw and I'm sure there would be a lot of media interest in a game versus Maccabi Tel Aviv. Lyon and Fenerbahce are the only two teams ranked higher than Celtic and worth avoiding.

In pot 3 it's quite split with four teams a lot higher ranked than the other 5 teams. We've played Young Boys last season and should be confident against them but the best two would be FCSB and Ludogorets. Some fans may like a trip to Nottingham but Nottingham Forest would be the team to avoid in this pot as would Nice or Freiburg.

Lastly pot 4 is similar in that it's half and half. Go Ahead Eagles and their player we were trying to sign (Jakob Breum) is the ideal tie and probably away so a nice trip to the Netherlands. Then either Malmo or Brann would be fine. Bologna, Stuggart and Celta Vigo the ones to avoid here.

So my preferences then are;

  • Pot 1 - home to Salzburg and away to Zagreb and a trip to Croatia. However Austria would be a nice trip too.

  • Pot 2 - away to the weaker team (Ferencvaros) and a trip to Hungary and home to PAOK.

  • Pot 3 - away to FCSB and a trip to Romania and home to Ludogorets.

  • Pot 4 - away to Go Ahead Eagles and home to Brann Bergen
