Feyenoord v Celtic (Match Preview)

Probabilities for the match are - Celtic 17%, Feyenoord 61% and 22% the draw.

Feyenoord won the league last season beating PSV by 7 points and they are 4th so far this season having won 3 and drawn 2.

They are a Pot 1 team however their ELO ranking of 37 had them ranked 21st out of the 32 teams in the Champions League this season. With all Pot 2 teams and 3 of the Pot 3 teams ranked higher.

Atletico Madrid (10th) and Lazio (20th) are ranked higher so this could be Celtic's best opportunity of getting points away from home. Although no mean feat given they are a very good team.

Their two draws were at the start of the season and they seem to have hit their rhythm with a 5-1 win and two 6-1 wins in their last 3 games. In their latest league game on Saturday against Heerenveen at home they lined up with the following;

  • 22 Wellenreuther

  • 4 Geertruida, 18 Trauner, 33 Hancko and 5 Hartman

  • 20 Wieffer and 8 Timber

  • 14 Paixao, 10 Stengs and 17 Ivanusec

  • 29 Gimenez

Subs used were 19 year old right winger Minteh (for Gimenez), defensive midfielder Zerrouki (for Timber), attacking midfielder Lingr (for Paixao), 17 year old attacker Sauer (for Ivanusec) and 19 year old midfielder Zechiel (for Stengs).

Unused subs were keeper Lamprou, 19 year old keeper van Sas, centre back Beelen, left back defender Lopez, central midfielder van den Belt and right winger Jahanbakhsh.

  • German keeper Timon Wellenreuther has represented his country at Under 21 level

  • Right back Lutsharel Geertruida also plays at centre back and has been capped by the Netherlands

  • Centre back Gernot Trauner has played for the Austrian national team

  • Centre back David Hancko can also play left back and he has 31 caps for Slovakia. He was 5th last season for passes per 90 at 63.9 highlighting Feyenoord do like to play out from the back.

  • 21 year old feft back Quilindschy Hartman came through the youth system at Feyenoord. He had 0.85 xA at the weekend.

  • Defensive midfielder Mats Wieffer has been capped 4 times by the Netherlands

  • Midfielder Quinten Timber is a product of the Ajax youth set up and he has played at Under 17, Under 18 and Under 21 levels for the Netherlands national team

  • Brazilian Igor Paixao is a winger who has played 43 times for Feyenoord. He was 6th in Eredivisie last season for xA per 90 on 0.35. He played on the right wing at the weekend but can play on either wing.

  • Attacking midfielder Calvin Stengs as 7 caps for the Netherlands. He had 0.78 xA at the weekend.

  • Left winger Luka Ivanusec has 17 caps for Croatia. He is 10th this season for xA per 90 on 0.39.

  • Up front is Santiago Gimenez who has 20 caps for Mexico. He was 4th in Eredivisie last season for xG per 90 with 0.69 and he is 3rd this season so far on 1.13.

Ten of the starting line up have played in the last three games with Yankuba Minteh playing instead of Ivanusec being the only change. That was in their third last game.

In their last game against Heerenveen they won 6-1 with an xG of 3.24 and Post Shot xG of 4.51.

Their shop map from the game is below.

It will be interesting to see who Rodgers picks for this and I wouldn't be totally surprised with a back 5 and utilising the 3 fit centre backs Celtic currently have with Yang possibly dropping out.

That would leave a front two of Maeda and Kyogo who could be used to hit Feyenoord on the counter attack.
