Motherwell v Celtic (Match Stats)

Motherwell 1

xG 0.47

(Tierney 86)

Celtic 2

xG 1.43

(Kyogo 15 and Maeda 84)

For the 5th league game in a row Celtic's xG in the 1st half was lower than 2nd half which bucks the trend of last year where the xG was 53% in the first half and 47% in the second half.

Also bucking the trend for last season is Celtic conceding in the last 15 minutes. Last season Celtic only conceded once in the last 15 minutes and that was the first game of the season when Carter-Vickers and Hart weren't playing.

That's three times now Celtic have conceded in the last 15 minutes with two of those games being the last two.

Celtic's xG of 1.43 was their second lowest of the season (after the St Mirren game) however continuing their great record of conceding very little xG and Motherwell on having 0.47 xG this was enough so see this game over the line.

Although Celtic had more xG in the second half their possession reduced as you can see by the 5 minutes possession trends graph below. Possession was 67.8% in the second half versus 72.8% in the first half.

Celtic lined up with;

  • Hart

  • Juranovic, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt and Taylor

  • Mooy, O'Riley and Hatate

  • Abada, Kyogo and Jota

A very unusual player position map with O'Riley actually the further ahead midfielder.

O'Riley's touch map below shows he didn't play like the defensive midfielder he has been recently and he also got 0.69 xA.
